Keith and Kurt Christensen Sweep Area J Trials
Complete results below

Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, under the direction of Jonathan Mitsumori, did another great job of hosting and running this year’s trials. CBYC even provided before-race snacks and after-racing dinner and beer. The turn out was a little lighter than last year probably due to several races occurring just before and after the May 14-15 weekend. The turn out included 9 boats: 7 Tiger/F18s, one Prindle 16 and one A-cat. The event was dominated by the Hobie Tiger/F18 class with some boats registered as Hobie Tiger and some as F18. The primary difference being that some did not carry the compass and paddle required by the F18 class. Still, Keith and Kurt Christensen won every race even corrected against the F18 class. This was quite impressive since neither of them had raced since the fall.
The winds were generally light with several races taking place with around 7 knots of breeze.  Last year’s winner, Jeff Newsome, sailed with Peter Nay and came in second. Ian Storer on A-cat had several good races in the light winds and caught a great puff in race 6 to nearly take a first. In these lighter winds, the A-cat was very competitive with the F18 class but still a very difficult thing to bring spinnaker boats and non-spinnaker boats to parity using a handicap system. Third place went to Steve Leo and Jeff Fortuna and 4th place to Dan Delave and Eileen Haubl. Dennis Key ended up last owing to a dismasting on Saturday and thus retiring from the event. Interestingly, his boat, which is fairly new, broke a shroud at the swedge in fairly light winds. Also, Dennis lost the mast last year as well due to a mysteriously lost shroud pin.
We are looking forward to next year’s trials and hope to get the I20s back in the racing as well. They would likely have won this year in the light breeze but were missing for some reason. We are hoping the CBYC will take on the challenge of running the event again next year.
