Day 5 –
April 17, 2005
Conditions: Light 5-8 knots
Regatta Chairman Dan DeLave reports:
All hail the new Alter Cup champs of 2005: Greg
Thomas and Jacques Bernier.
There were interesting conditions at
the start of first race of the last day. The winds were about 4 knots and
shifty. At the start of the race only one boat went to the hard left and
most of the others were looking for the wind to fill in to the right. In
the end both ways came out about the same. Then Tomko started his bid to
be able to sail in the very next race. He was able to finish 1 minute
ahead of Hawks who was one minute in front of Pedrick in third place.
Although Tomko was expected to move up it was Hawks that put on a good
show of being able to keep the second place throughout the race which was
a three-lap course with a downwind finish course 2.
We are starting the second race of the day which will be the last race for
the fleet A. There will be a race for 3rd as the 1st
and 2nd place have mostly been determined by now. It will be a
race for show gets the last place on the podium. Melvin was in the third
place overall going into this race but only by a point over Tomko and 7
points over Noriega. The wind at the beginning was about 4 knots but was
able to fill in to between 6 and 8 for most of the race. In the end Melvin
was able to best the fleet with a 1st and keep his 3rd
place overall. Tomko was right behind Melvin for most of the race waiting
for a mistake to be made. Much to his disappointment that did not happen;
Tomko was followed in by Schreyer.
The last race of the series got underway in 7 to 8 knots of wind. At the
start all the boats were lined up in very nice fashion. It was a clean
start. They are able to get the windward hull out of the water but not
enough to be trapezing downwind. Camera won followed by Porter then Kohl.
That seems like a nice way to end a regatta. They will be sailing into
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club after this so we can put the boats away, drink a
bit, tell a few lies and get the trophies presented.
It has been a very successful regatta, due in large part to the efforts
of the volunteers and the great attitude of all the sailors. Much thanks
go to those dedicated volunteers on the water and on the beach. On the
water on the committee boat was Jerry Mongomery as our illustrious PRO.
Helping him were Barbara Shaffer, Art Stevens, Darline Hobock, Ned Cooke,
Bob Anderson and Gordon Isco. On the Mark boats were Sandra Tartaglino,
Tom Delong, Alan Egusa, Ron Wood, Eileen Haubl, Jeremy Laundergan, Pease
Glaser, Teri McKenna and Steve Myrter. On the beach making sure we could
turn the boats in a timely manner are the beach captain Pat McCormick, Dan
Mangus, John Williams and Joe Keenan..
