Regatta Chair Dan
DeLave reports:
There were interesting conditions at
the start of first race of the last day. The winds were about 4 knots and
shifty. At the start of the race only one boat went to the hard left and
most of the others were looking for the wind to fill in to the right. In
the end both ways came out about the same. Then Tomko started his bid to
be able to sail in the very next race. He was able to finish 1 minute
ahead of Hawks who was one minute in front of Pedrick in third place.
Although Tomko was expected to move up, it was Hawks that put on a good
show and was able to keep the second place throughout the race which was
a three-lap course with a downwind finish course 2.
At the last race for fleet A, it was a
race for show for third place on the podium. Melvin was in the third
place overall going into this race but only by a point over Tomko and 7
points over Noriega. The wind at the beginning was about 4 knots but was
able to fill in to between 6 and 8 for most of the race. In the end Melvin
was able to best the fleet with a 1st and keep his 3rd
place overall. Tomko was right behind Melvin for most of the race waiting
for a mistake to be made. Much to his disappointment that did not happen;
Tomko was followed in by Schreyer.
The last race of the series got underway in 7 to 8 knots of wind. At the
start all the boats were lined up in very nice fashion. It was a clean
start. They are able to get the windward hull out of the water but not
enough to be trapezing downwind. Camera won followed by Porter then Kohl.
That seems like a nice way to end a regatta.
The new U.S. Multihull Champions are Greg
Thomas and Jacques Bernier
who win the Hobie Alter Cup.The
fleet sailed into
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club afterwards to put the boats away, drink a
bit, tell a few lies and get the trophies presented.
