Day 2- Saturday, August 5

Clear skies and light South East winds greeted sailors for the 15th running of the North American Challenge Cup and 17th running of the Independence Cup.  The volunteers and many sailors were adorned in American Airlines shirts in honor of one of our major race sponsors and helped to set the tone for a great day of racing.  As the day progressed, we lost the sun, but gained winds up to 10 knots.  We had a moderate chop from the southeasterly breeze, but the teams handled it well after a day of practice Friday with coaches Betsy Alison and Lee Icyda.  Rolex Watch USA Inc. helped make the coaching possible as part of their seminar series with US SAILING.

After five consecutive races the 2.4m class is in a tie for first. Roger Cleworth, member of the US Paralympics sailing team and John Ruf of Pewaukee, WI., a first time competitor in the US disabled sailing championship.

The Freedom 20’s sailed 3 races in a round-robin format.  After our first day we see past champion Karen Mitchell, Deerfield Beach, FL tied with Chicago native Mike Jaffe.  These two competitors have squared off many times at this event in past years, and it will be exciting to see the outcome.
