 Weather Conditions

Sunday's weather was about as good as it gets and it came down to the last race.

Going into it, the leader, two-time Olympic medalist Paul Foerster had yet to win a race and David Loring, a two time winner of the Sunfish Worlds, was only six points behind and had won three races. With no discards, every race counted.

Each had suffered mishaps.  During Race 6, Foerster had a breakdown and missed the next race.  It was Loring's unlucky run in with a floating trash bag in Race 3 that cost him his only non-top ten finish.  Waiting for the start, it was clear - the championship was still there for the taking for both men.

Then Paul Foerster, representing Rush Creek Yacht Club, won the final race on the 2008 U.S. Singlehanded Championship to take home the O'Day Trophy and the title.  David  Loring (Charleston, SC)   took home second place.  Paul-Jon Patin (Forest Hills, NY), who had served as the co-chair of the event, took home third. After it was all over, Foerster said he felt he'd only just won and was very lucky that there were no discards.

This was Foerster's second trip to the finals.  The last time was when he was just 22 and then they only were able to race three races, due to an incoming hurricane.  This time, he said, was a lot better with great wind and great waves, conditions he loves.

The Peter J. Barrett Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Richard Chapman (Libertyville, Ill.)  in recognition of the advice and assistance he offered to the number of sailors who were not normally Sunfish sailors.  Chapman tailored rig tension for the competitor's weight and gave the relatively novice Sunfish sailors tips on managing the wind and waves.
