It started out innocent enough. Beautiful sunny skies, a moderate offshore breeze creating chop even a small fishing boat wouldn't mind. And a casual set up pace driven by the decision to get all the racing in without a lunch break. So 15 boats cheerfully launched from the grassy shore of the Windjammers Sailing Club ready for action. Well, somebody must have dished the Packers or something, because the Green Bay Wind Gods started blowin' snot just about the same time the last boat made it to the starting line. The big dogs on their new F-18 Infusions didn't seem to mind as the Team of Korte/
Winquist and Carlson/Carlson snorted back with a one-two finish in Race One. Come to think of it, it probably WAS them dishin' the Pack, damn Bear/Viking fans that they are. (Sorry, Brad. You're guilty by association.) A variety of calamities narrowed the finishing field of Race One to eleven boats, which would prove to be the high count for the day.

By the start of Race Two, 8 of the 15 boats decided that they valued their well being and equipment more than their pride. And why not! It was now after 12 noon, they made it to shore with their masts still vertical, and they were on terra firma giggling like a bunch of school girls knowing that the 7 remaining cowboys were about to get spanked again. And it didn't take long. Skipper Dave Reese got thrown from the boat right after the starting gun. Crew Matt looked back in amazement as if to say, "yeah sure, I'll turn this thing around by myself and pick you up!" With some help from the chase boat, Big Dave found his butt back on the boat. Team Carlson continued to enjoy the big wind, with another 2nd place finish, bested only by Team Malcheski on the Tornado. Both of these boats benefited from some unexpected assistance from the Green Bay Wind Gods who finally got tired of the Pack-bashin and inflicted Skipper Korte with a dislocated shoulder, preventing the Team from completing Race Two. Kurt will be painting the motor home green and gold prior to the next regatta. Rounding out the top three was the Team of Brown/Selsmeyer. No, not Guy, Debbie or Alex. That would be Clay, coming back strong after being out most of the summer with a broken collar bone. (Mental Note dor Clay: Motorcycles--fast; Ground--hard; Flying Over Handlebar--ouch).

Having survived two races, Team Hearn decided it was time for the lightweights to pack it in. The Chu-Chu Train followed suit leaving just four boats for the final race. Before the "Never Too Much Wind" Malcheskis notched their second bullet of the day: the Brown/Selsmeyer Team broke a boom and tore a spinnaker bag; the Selsmeyer/Selsmeyer Team snapped a side stay and drifted most of the way to Green Bay; and Team Carlson got their first Infusion righting experience. As the last boat standing, the Malcheskis earned a well-deserved victory. Martin just wanted to know why we didn't run another race, all this great wind and all! (that Martin, he's such a kidder).

Going into Day Two, Ben and Martin on the Tornado had a commanding lead. The light winds, however, brought out the best in Norm and Gary, I mean Gary and Norm. Or maybe I should just say Chu, then no one will know I can't really tell them apart. And Jim Young had a great day, too. But funny, I always forget his crew's name, too. But anyway, the two boats swapped one and two positions for the day's two races. But lurking in the background was Team Carlson. With two solid Day Two races, they nipped Team Malcheski at the wire to become Area K Champs by just one point! Congratulations to Brent and Jen on a great performance. (Prediction: Team Carlson will take a keen interest in the Capricorn in the months ahead. G-day, Mate.)
