Started sailing in Weymouth, UK, in 16’ Falcon centerboard one designs. Continued sailing at Oxford University and in Medical School in ‘Alpha’s, Int 12 Sq Metre Sharpies and Royal Burnham One Designs. Sailed in National Firefly Week and Int 12 ft Dinghy during Burton Week.
After moving to Newport, Rhode Island, sailed in local Shields Fleet # 9 and became Race Committee Chairman at Ida Lewis Yacht Club which initiated Level Rating Championships – The “SAIL” Trophies for One Ton & Half Ton classes.
Vice Chairman of the America’s Cup Challenger series at Newport in 1977, 1980 & 1983. Also spent some time in Fremantle on the 1986-87 Louis Vuitton Cup Race Committee.
Secretary of the 1999-2000 America’s Cup Challenger’s Association. (Auckland NZ)
Treasurer of the International Twelve Metre Association.
12 Metre Class advisor to Royal Yacht Squadron Race Committee for 2001America’s Cup Jubilee at Cowes.
Have been involved with the Newport arrangements for the Singlehanded TransAtlantic races from 1972 to 2012:
Former “BOC” & “Around Alone” races when in Newport.
Race Committee Chairman for last “Around Alone” start for Brazil to Newport leg.
Assisted with the starts of the Newport Bermuda Race and finishes for Annapolis to Newport Race for many years.
Member of the Race Committee at Ida Lewis Yacht Club since 1972 and New York Yacht Club since 1989 – Chairman 1995 to 1998.
PRO for Shields Fleet # 9 season long racing with up to 35 competitors.
