Andrew Nathanson, professor of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University has had a career long academic interest in Marine Medicine, with a focus on water sports injuries and prevention.  He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he was the captain of the sailing team. Dr. Nathanson has conducted numerous studies, published in peer-reviewed medical journals on injuries and illness associated with surfing, sailing, and other ocean water sports.  He co-authored the book “Surf Survival” – a comprehensive health and fitness guide for surfers, and chairs the week-long course “Medicine for Mariners and Safety-at-sea” held annually in the British Virgin Islands. Dr. Nathanson serves as faculty advisor for the Brown Medical School Wilderness Medicine elective and lectures internationally on a variety of topics in in the fields of wilderness and marine medicine. Sailing Resume includes Newport to Newfoundland, charters in Turkey, Virgin Islands, Lesser Antilles, and local racing in Narragansett Bay on a wide variety of keelboats. Son, Nainoa sails for Tufts.
