2008 One-Design Regatta Award
Hobie Cat 40th Anniversary Regatta
The Hobie Cat 40th Anniversary Regatta was held at Dana Point, CA, October 3-5, 2008. This was a large commemorative event, spanning three days, with approximately 110 boats registered (~3x the average Hobie regatta attendance). Over 500 people attended the celebration and party on Saturday evening at Doheny State Beach/Park in Dana Point. Racers came from as far away as Australia and Puerto Rico to attend this event, including several National and World Champions. This was by far the largest Hobie regatta (racers and nonracers), outside of the National Championships, in over 15 years! The evening program included a presentation and “town hall”-type discussion session w/ several of the original “Hobie Legends”, including Hobie Alter Sr, Wayne Schafer, Sandy Banks, and others. There was a full BBQ dinner served, w/ many micro-brew kegs on tap, a live band, a raffle of various Hobie items, and a large silent auction. Wyland, the world famous marine life artist, attended to paint a Hobie Hull, which was auctioned off that evening as well.
Major sponsors included not only Hobie Design Co., and Hobie Cat Co., but also West Marine, Dana Point Yacht Club, Wyland Organization, ClifBar, Saddleback Memorial Hospital, and a variety of smaller local sponsors. Press coverage included cover page articles in several regional newspapers, as well as radio placements at several stations w/in 200 miles of Dana Point. A full length feature article was published in Sailing Magazine and Sailing World.
The Doheny State Beach/Park, the Dana Point Interpretive Society, and the Dana Point Historical Society all worked with us to make this event a success. And all proceeds from the event are being donated to the DP Interpretive Society, a non-profit organization.
Other activities included a Hobie Kayak demonstration throughout the weekend for families, a full Community Fair w/ over 25 organizations in attendance, a co-sponsored Paddleboard and Stand-up Paddleboard race, and a children’s coloring contest hosted by Wyland himself. Of the 100+ boats racing in the regatta, the following Hobie classes were present: Hobie 14, 16 (A, B, C Fleets), 17, 18, 20, & Tigers. We also ran a separate course for the youth to race on Hobie Holders. And the Hobie Island Adventures, a hybrid kayak-sailing trimaran also had an exhibition race setup on this second course. The event was a huge success, not only from the racing stand-point, but also from the community and historical perspective. There were an abundance of “thank yous” after the event, with many Hobie racers commenting that this was their best regatta ever, and several comments about this even being better than some Hobie World’s events, which is immense praise in itself.
