The
Officers, Directors and Members of
US SAILING
are
pleased to present the
ARTHUR B. HANSON RESCUE MEDAL
to the crew of
for the rescue as follows:
On March 21st
2004 during the Spring One Design Invitational at the St. Francis Yacht
Club, Mr. Magoo a J/120 was headed downwind in about 15 knots of breeze.
Just after setting the Spinnaker, Mr. Magoo went into a fairly quick gybe.
Crewman David White was running the tail of the kite around, lost his
footing and slid underneath the lifeline into the cold 52-degree water.
The crew of Good Timin’ a J/105 consisting of Chris & Phil Perkins,
Dave Wilson, Aimee Leroy, Pete Scott and John Collins saw the victim hit
the water. After watching in amazement as the lead J/105 sailed right past
the victim the crew of Good Timin’ sprung into action. While the Victim
was wearing a PFD he didn’t appear to be responding. The crew rolled the
jib in, luffed up next to the Victim and pulled him in over the lifelines.
After rendezvousing with the Mr. Magoo, and transferring the victim back
the crew of Good Timin' jumped back into the race.
Congratulations to the Chris
Perkins, Phil Perkins, David Wilson, and Aimee Leroy Pete Scott, and John Collins for their quick action in
coming to the aid of a fellow racer in distress.
The quick thinking and decisive action aboard Good Timin’ averted
what could have been a
tragedy. US SAILING is pleased to present the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue
Medal in recognition of this event.
