US SAILOR Of The
Week Brian Skeels |
For most sailors out there, there’s a parent or a spouse supporting them on and/or off the water. Some spouses are just happy to have a day or weekend alone, while others come along and provide support, no matter if it’s on the docks, on the water, or both. For Brian Skeels, there’s no doubt about it: if he and his wife can find childcare for their 18-month-old daughter Ellie, he’ll be out on the water to support and cheer for his wife, Sarah Everhart-Skeels. Brian, a rehabilitation engineer by trade, is a PHRF sailor himself, usually sailing his Sonar named Overwhelmed on the waters near Jamestown, RI. But these days he spends most of his time watching his wife Sarah compete and providing on-the-water support. “It’s almost like backseat driving,” Brian says jokingly about watching his wife race. “Sometimes I ask her after a race why she made a certain move.” Brian, Sarah, and Ellie can be found in Newport, RI, later this month as Sarah competes for a spot on the US Disabled Sailing Team in the new doublehanded SKUD18. |
