US SAILOR Of The Week
Sophie Fraser

Sophie Fraser

As a 14-year-old sailor who has just outgrown her trusted Opti this summer, Sophie Fraser is going through a transition that many young sailors experience. With so many types of boats out there, which one should succeed the Opti? For Sophie, the transition seems to be going well: she switched to a Laser Radial just three weeks ago, right after moving from Mandeville, LA, to Houston, TX. According to her dad, the Opti gave Sophie confidence on the water. Now that she's sailing a bigger and slightly more complex boat, the Laser Radial is bringing her up to a new level of confidence. Not that she really needed that extra confidence though: she grew up on the water sailing with her dad who would let her stand watch at the wheel while he'd make the sandwiches, so she knows what she's doing. Sophie is working hard to quickly gain more experience in the Laser Radial: she's already competing in her first national championship this week, the U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship (in 43rd place after day one). Good luck, Sophie!
