The south in the summer time is known for its heat and there is no exception for the 2007 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship. Humidity and temperatures in the mid 90s, greeted the last of the sailors as they arrived at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. With the winds out of the east between 5-10 mph, many were anxious to get onto Lake Pontchartrain, the championship’s venue for racing.

Today competitors in the 2007 U.S. Youth Championships participated in the clinic prior to the start of racing.  Led by David Perry and with participation of all the coaches present, the sailors reviewed local conditions on shore and then broke into fleets.  Led by the coaching squad,  each fleet worked on fine tuning their rigging prior to going out.

The fleets then headed out the channel onto Lake Ponchartrain where they split into singlehanded and doublehanded fleets.

Sunday morning was hot and still.  The fleet were ashore at the beginning of the day, waiting for the breeze to fill in.  Many of the sailors clustered together to watch the second race of the America's Cup.  Joining them were several race officials and parents, themselves just returned from Valencia, whose comments provided additional insight into the day's racing.

Just before noon, lunch was served and the postponement flag dropped.  The sailors, eager to begin the championship, launched their boats and headed out into the lake.

It was a most interesting weather day on Monday in New Orleans.   Competitors left the dock at approximately 9:30 am CDT in very little wind and bright sunshine.  As the boats approached the Race Course, the wind arrived on time allowing the Race Committee to organize and begin the 4th Race of the 2007 Youth Champs for all classes.

Over the course of the next hour the wind varied but remained generally below 5 knots.  Just after 11:00am the wind began to cooperate and both PROs began races in a building wind in advance of a coming summer rainstorm.

As racing progressed the race area was overcast by dark clouds off to the north and east of the race course.
