National Junior Women's Championships Chair, Shannon Bush reports: |
Rain, rain, go away! We were on land for most of the
day, when the PRO made a crucial decision: the weather maps indicated an
open window that stretched from Corpus Christi,
past Victoria and looked to be moving North, so let's go sailing.
Brilliant decision, Jim
Tichenor!
We left the harbor, the gray skies looking ominous,
the wind steadily increasing and clocking around to the normal
seabreeze...it's going to be great
racing weather. At 4:20, we got off the start of Race 1, an Individual
Recall for 12 boats, but no one came back. Sarah
Lihan held the lead until the final 300
yards to the finish, when Annie Haeger,
literally zoomed past her in a puff she seemed to carry down the entire
leeward leg.
Soon after that, the wind clocked a little more and we
got off the start of Race 2 at 5:30 -- it was a beautiful start for the
entire fleet. The course was a little longer and the breeze a little
bigger, but still great racing. Sarah Lihan
lead wire to wire, fending off a late
challenge from Annie Haeger. Annie
likes the left side of the course on the run and easily caught 15 boats on
the first run. Fantastic surfing conditions!!
From my perspective, it's awesome watching the young
ladies I first met when they were 10-13 years old, in
Optis, now tearing up the race course
in winds between 8-14 kts!
We were all off the water just before 7:00pm and
everyone (and I mean everyone) is ready to chow down on Comida
Mexicana and hit the hay . Preliminary scores were posted from on the
water and photos soon to follow.
It looks like more of the same storm-type delays
tomorrow. As long as we can run a few races in great conditions in the
late afternoon (it gets dark here about 8:30), and they'll hold supper,
we're sailing!
