What a day! Cal Yacht Club’s Race Committee “A” Team led by PRO Rock Star Bill Stump ran four great races this afternoon, for a total of seven for the series so far. Sunny skies and 10-12 knots of southwesterly breeze made today typical of the normally great sailing conditions found here in the summer. The competitors raced hard and the standings changed considerably as the scoring was further impacted by the application of the throwout race.
The wind was stronger today than yesterday, and several of the smaller women that were at the front fell deep in the fleet by the end of the day. Locals Allie Blecher and Case Hathaway settled in to the top ten, with Allie managing a series score of 4th going into the final day of racing. Case got to throw out a 33 collected in yesterday’s shifty conditions, helping to put her racing series score at 10th. Thursday is also predicted to be more of the typical seasonal conditions expected in Southern California—10-12 with higher in the late afternoon.
But the real story is Stephanie Roble, who, after seven races, throws out a 3rd – yes, you read that right – she throws a third so far, and is solidly in first place, with Morgan Wilson sitting in the second spot, and Sarah Lihan comfortably in third with a 21 point lead over Allie’s fourth.
As a special treat, our rather full press/spectator boat was piloted today by none other than the Curmudgeon himself, founder of the sailboat racing news and opinion e-sheet “Scuttlebutt,” Mr. Tom Leweck. Heard opining, “am I the only member of the press aboard the press boat?” His wit and good humor was enjoyed by all during their day on the water.
Meanwhile, the day was finished over dinner with an inspirational and informative talk and slide show by Pease Glaser, Silver Medal Winner in the 2000 Olympics (yes, she even brought her medal so the competitors could examine it).
With seven races now completed at the U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship, the leaderboard from Tuesday remains the same. Stephanie Roble (East Troy, WI) has increased her lead in the National Championship for the Leiter Trophy. Roble, with just 8 points total, is now 11 points ahead of Morgan Wilson (Arnold, MD). Roble's discard is a third place finish and she has four bullets. Sarah Lihan (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is still just two points behind Wilson with 21 points total. The rest of the fleet is further behind with Allie Blecher (Fullerton, CA) in fourth place with 42 points. With racing scheduled to go through Thursday, there are still opportunities for changes in the leading pack.
