Wallace/Gumpel Team Wins Again in Area J

Scott Miller Area J Multihull Representative

This year’s Area J event was hosted again by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in the waters off San Pedro, California. Racing got started late each day while waiting for the winds to build. Racing went late on Saturday and after 4 races, we finally headed back to shore around 6 PM. The winds did build nicely into double trapped conditions (about 14 knots) on Saturday and thus a variety of conditions were obtained. Several boats flipped and broke down in the later races making for some good stories in the bar on Saturday evening. Sunday we bobbed around waiting for an abandon race flag, but a serious race committee did get a race off at about 3:00 in the afternoon. The race committee was very professional and did another great job. This year we did the event with the 505s on the same course. This worked out well and made the turnout a little better. This is always a good event and we encourage more crews to join US SAILING and come out for this event. The venue off San Pedro is one of the best in
California for racing and there is no bob time as the race committee is there almost solely for us.

Brandon Wallace and James Gumpel, on an I20, stole the show on Saturday correcting out in first in all conditions. This highly experienced team has not been racing that much lately but it didn’t seem to show. Another set of veterans, Jeff Newsome and Roger Jenkins, took 2nd on a Hobie Tiger F18. In third place were Dennis Key and Scott Miller on an Infusion F18. We apologize to last year’s winners, Keith Christensen and Jeff Fortuna, who were sailing in the Alter Cup championship in
Florida at the same time that this year’s eliminations were taking place.
