H Alter Cup qualifier was held September 13-14 at Cascade Locks, Oregon, at
the start of the Columbia River Gorge, world known with windsurfers for its
strong wind. Seven races were held in heavy wind. Saturday wind was from the
east, with gusts around 30 mph. Sunday the wind turned to the west, but
again gusts were recorded at 30 mph. It was a test for those entered, and in
only one race were all the entrants able to finish.
Race one saw confusion as Debbie Marshack was separated from her boat after
a capsize. Bob Johnson stopped to help, but crew Chris Kelsey jumped in the
water and his skipper was unable to get to the two before Peter Nelson came
by and picked up both. Peter Nelson had a strong showing in his Hobie 16,
but decided to sit out races 2 and 3 because of the difficult
conditions. After the first day, there was a tie for first between Ken
Marshack on a Hobie 18 and Mike Wallace on his Hobie 17. During the sixth
race, Mike augured in going downwind and damaged his boom connection. He was
unable to repair in time for the last race.
