Alter Cup Area J Trials
King Harbor Yacht Club - Redondo Beach, CA
July 27-28, 2002

by Roger Brown

The US SAILING Area J Alter Cup trials is a bring-your-own-boat affair that attracts a wide variety of beach cats, from featherweight one-person uni-rig A-Cats to powerful Hobie Foxes and Inter 20 spinnaker boats. It was the latter that found conditions most to their liking this year, sailing in winds ranging from 6 – 11 knots in the usual Redondo bump. In fact, the seasoned team of Brandon Wallace and James Gumpel scored straight bullets on both elapsed and corrected times on their jet-black Inter 20, earning the right to represent Area J at the next Alter Cup finals. This will be Brandon & James’ third straight trip to the Alter Cup, and their second time as the Area J representatives. Jeff Newsome and Peter Ney followed in second on their Hobie Fox, having found another “gear” in the lighter air on Sunday to beat out rivals Steve Myrter & Julia Thompson on another Fox. Steve Leo & Teri McKenna finished in third in Steve’s new Hobie Tiger, an 18’ Formula 18 class cat imported from Europe that’s rapidly gaining popularity in this country. Myrter/Thompson finished in fourth, followed by Roger Jenkins on his A-Cat in fifth.

King Harbor Yacht Club has hosted this event for the past several years, and put on a great event as always. Much thanks to Regatta Chairman Mark Hansen, PRO Jerry Martin, and to the members and staff of KHYC!

During the regatta it was announced that the Alter Cup finals would be held April 5-11, 2003 at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center in Clearwater, Florida. That event will be sailed on brand new identical Bimare Javelin 2s, an 18 footer new to the U.S.
