Alter Cup Qualifier Area A
June 15-16, 2002
Sebago Lake, Maine

The weather forecast wasn’t pretty for the weekend, leading to a
low turnout for this year’s Area A Alter Cup Elimination hosted by the
Catamaran Racing Association of Northern New England at Sebago Lake State Park in Casco, Maine. Unfortunately, the weathermen were right this time. Five catamarans made up the fleet with two Inter 20s and three Nacra 6.0NAs. Four other die-hard sailors on powerboats made up the race committee knowing the show must go on. On a positive note, the rain kept away all the powerboats and swimmers that park on the beautiful sandbar we sail from. Actually, we had the lake to ourselves.

Setup Saturday morning was wet and cold. Racing was postponed for about an hour getting things set up. Racing commenced about 11:15 and the racing committee managed to get in four races for the day. The air temp was mid fifties with rain that varied from a drizzle to a moderate downpour. During the first race, winds varied from 10 to 20 Knots. For the Second, 10-15 knots, for Race 3, 12 knots, and for Race 4, again 10-15 Knots. The wind was up for a lot of the day and very shifty at times.

The first day finished with Barry Moore and Nora Zellmer up front with three bullets and a 2nd. Who could expect anything less as they had just gotten back from a week of sailing together at Oneida Lake in Syracuse where they took 2nd in the silver fleet for a 12th position overall at the 2002 Alter Cup race.

Sunday was a much nicer day. It didn’t rain other than a little drizzle. The wind started out light and built throughout the races. Race 5 was 5.5 knots average; Races 6 and 7 had an average of 8.75 knots each. Again, Barry and Nora were the ones out front with three additional bullets. It looks like they are going back next year.
