Pensacola Yacht Club
Area D Championship and
2001 Lundquist Memorial Regatta
Pensacola, Florida
August 18-19, 2001
Only three races were sailed out of a planned seven in the
Lundquist Regatta in Pensacola, FL, August 18-19. The first race started in a 10-12 knot
sea breeze that was corrupted 90° by a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms on both days forced
the fleet in early and shut down racing for the day. Everyone got shocked on the beach
from the lightning all around both days. Out of seven scheduled races, we got in two
windward-leewards and one race with a reach, sailed mostly in BN 2-3.
Twenty-four boats raced as one large open fleet that included Hobie Tigers, Hobie
20s, Inter 20s, Inter 18s, Prindle 19MXs and NACRA 6.0s. Bob Curry and Woody Cope were on
their Javelins and Bob Hodges sailed his Boyer Mk IV. Some of the other sailors present
included Randy Smyth, Nigel Pitt, Brian Lambert, Alex Shafer, and Kirk Newkirk. This
regatta was as competitive as the Alter Cup itself. Nigel Pitt won overall on the Tiger.
It appears the current Portsmouth A-Cat rating is pretty good in comparison to all the
boats sailing except for the new Hobie Tiger. Nigel Pitt and Alex Shafer were sailing
their Tigers boat for boat with I-20s at times so it is expected the Tiger rating will be
lowered. The A-Cat rating was almost identical to the Tiger but, remember, the Tiger has a
chute and it was downwind that the Tiger made its time on the As. In general, it is very
difficult for a well sailed non-spinnaker boat to correct out on a well sailed spinnaker
boat.
Thank you, John Williams and Bob Hodges, for this report.
