U.S. Offshore Championship Selection Procedure

The following is the procedure used by the U.S. Offshore Championship Selection Committee to select participants in the U.S. Offshore Championship.   The U.S. Offshore Championship selectors are the various area directors of the US SAILING Areas and the Chair of the U. S. Offshore Championship Committee.  The selections may be made in one of two ways; either based on the results of a designed race or race series within the area or by resume selection.  In the event of a resume selection, each application is ranked by the Area Director (or their designee) and by the Chair of the Offshore Championship Committee and then ranked overall. Remember, we have access to the internet.  Do not fudge results!

Each team’s resume is scored using the criteria below. The maximum total score is 100.

·         Overall team sailing experience together (35)

·         Skipper Race Experience (10)

·         Most competitive regattas (25)

·         Best Final Positions (15)

·         Number of regattas out of local area (15)

The intent of the system is to rank all teams in an Area and select the top team to represent that Area.  In the event that there are open slots remaining, all remaining teams will be placed in a common pool and selected to fill the remaining slots in order of ranking.  If all the top teams cannot attend, the next team in order will be selected.  Selectors should keep detailed records of decisions with respect to each applicant.

Keep in mind that comments and records will only be reviewed by the Selection Committee Chairman and are STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL.

Each team's ability and background will be determined by:

            a. examining regatta results

            b. drawing on personal knowledge

            c. researching the relative difficulty of regattas held and the level of competition

While ranking applicants, the Selection Committee members must keep in mind the single most common "complaint" we receive is that a team who did not get accepted regularly beats another team who did get accepted. Research and knowledge should minimize this occurrence.

AS THE NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY FOR SAILING IN THE UNITED STATES, SELECTORS MAY NOT DISCRIMINATE BASED UPON THE APPLICANT'S RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, AGE, SEX OR NATIONAL ORIGIN.
