Susan R. Epstein, Nominee for Director
From:
Sharon, Massachusetts
Education:
Wheaton College, BA Chemistry, in addition to graduate courses
Experience:
For the analytical thinking that allows her occasional success as a competitor and demands thinking outside the box, Susan gives credit to her years of research and teaching chemistry at Wheaton College, a position she is now retired from. In her long sailing career she has owned and sailed in several one-design classes; competed in a few US SAILING Championships; served as Commodore of Hull Yacht Club, President of the Mass. Bay Sailing Association, and Director of Area A; established a college sailing program; and has been instrumental in developing two high school/community sailing programs. Currently, Susan views our sport from top to bottom: through the eyes of a daughter who competes at the national and world-class levels, and the eyes of three junior sailing grandsons with whom she actively participates as a 420/N10/Opti GrandMom. Current and previous activities include:
Board Member: US SAILING; National Women's Sailing Association
Grading Secretary, U.S. Match Race Committee
Certified Judge
210 owner/competitor
Past Chair: Council of Sailing Associations; Women’s Sailing Committee; U.S. Women's Match Racing Committee
Past President: 210 Class Association
Candidate's Statement:
"My mantra is Educate! Educate! Educate!—until what US SAILING really does is known to all. Competitive sailors at or near the top of the pyramid know US SAILING well: National Governing Body; resource for all sailing related information; maker of certified instructors, judges, and race officers; guardian of the rules; Organizing Authority for the US SAILING Championships; etc. When I pose the question, “What do you think US SAILING is all about?” to sailors at the broad base of the pyramid, the stock reply most often is, “It’s what you have to join to sail certain regattas.” So, Educate! Educate! Educate!"
