Dick Allsopp, Nominee for Director

From:  Orange Park, Florida

Education:  Jacksonville University, BS

Experience:  Dick is a lifelong sailor and power boater. He has sailed and raced Stars, Hobie 16s, Lasers and cruising boats. Dick has cruised in the U.S. Northeast, in the region between Trinidad to Panama (including four canal transits), and much in-between. A career naval aviator, he retired as a Captain in 1989. His operational tours have included: Commanding Officer of VS 28 USS Independence; Navigator, USS John F. Kennedy; Commanding Officer, USS Canisteo (AO99); and Chief of Staff Mediterranean Carrier Battle Group. Dick has extensive management experience, particularly in the training area, with five years as a flight instructor and involvement in the initial-development phase of a hands-on maintenance training program.

Candidate's Statement: "US SAILING, the national steward of the sport of sailing, is doing a particularly effective job, despite limited fiscal assets. Having been associated with the organization since the 1950s, I have watched it grow from a rules/handicapping organization to one that truly embodies the sport. Its expanded role in the training of instructors, race officers, and support/coach boat operators have led to increased performance and safety on the water. With the new reorganization of the Board, a continuing effort to effectively employ volunteers and improved communications with the membership, US SAILING will continue to fulfill its role in leading the sport."
